Independent development of core steel castings for large hydropower units

The project of “Application Demonstration of Core Steel Castings and Casting Production Technology for 800~1000 MW Super Large Hydropower Units” led and undertaken by Erzhong Equipment has passed the acceptance of Sichuan Provincial Department of Science and Technology. The expert group believes that the project has achieved the independent development of the core steel castings of large hydropower units, and has broad application prospects.

It is understood that the research object of this project is large-scale steel castings for giant hydraulic turbine units with a single unit capacity of 800~1000 MW. Through a combination of production, education, research, and application, Erzhong Equipment has broken through a series of key manufacturing technologies such as materials, molding, and dimensions, meeting the construction needs of world super hydropower projects such as Baihetan and Wudongde.

A number of technologies formed by the project have been promoted and applied to the production and manufacturing of key hydraulic turbine bearing steel castings by many well-known main engine plants at home and abroad, with excellent product quality and overall technical performance indicators reaching international advanced levels.

In the above-mentioned super hydropower project, Erzhong Equipment has undertaken the manufacturing task of important parts and equipment such as the upper crown, lower ring, and blades, which are important and key components of hydroelectric generating units in power stations. In the face of complex product structures and high manufacturing quality levels, Erzhong Equipment has bravely climbed to new heights in science and technology. Relying on the project, it has successively broken through several major key technical bottlenecks, achieved “high-quality manufacturing”, mastered the ultra-large tonnage ultra-low carbon stainless steel double-clad VOD refining and composition stability control technology, and tackled the requirements for product material stability, high strength, and high toughness limit performance indicators, Solved problems such as dimensional deformation of large diameter thin-walled annular steel castings, explored measures to ensure assembly dimensions of segmented large size steel castings after finishing, and achieved outstanding results in multiple professional disciplines such as materials, smelting, forging, technology, and surface treatment.
